Microsoft Continuum
Microsoft Continuum is a data transfer system introduced by Microsoft with Windows 10 Mobile that allows a Windows smartphone with Continuum support to be connected via a USB-C connection, a docking station (e.g. Microsoft Display Dock) or a Miracast - Connection (e.g. built into the device or via the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter) to an external monitor and the smartphone as a desktop computer as a processing unit for desktop-like operation with e.g. B. Use mouse and keyboard. A desktop-like operation and view is available, which is optimized for operation with classic input devices such as mouse and keyboard .
Monitors or projectors with HDMI , DisplayPort or Miracast support are supported. Since the Anniversary Update, it is also possible to project wirelessly onto any PC in the same network. In principle, all apps for this system platform that can be operated with the input devices connected in this way can be used under Continuum . For some application scenarios, a smartphone with this technology can replace a desktop computer, a tablet computer, a simple game console and / or a laptop. Since the previous smartphones that can be used for Continuum are ARM processor-operated systems, the execution of programs is limited to the Universal Windows Platform -Apps (UWP), since the classic x86 or x64 programs are not from this platform get supported.
The smartphone can only completely replace a desktop computer or laptop in certain situations because only UWP apps can run. Classic desktop programs cannot be executed directly on the system due to the different instruction set in ARM processors, but must - if available - be transferred to the device via streaming services (e.g. remote desktop apps).
