"Hamburger-Menu-Icon" is a colloquial name for an icon with three horizontal lines placed parallel to each other. Its structure symbolizes a menu list . The name came about because the icon can be associated with the three layers of a hamburger .

Historically, the icon has its origins in 1981 in the Xerox Star , one of the first workstations with a graphical user interface . The designer Norm Cox was responsible for the graphic design of the system including the icons. In 1985 Microsoft took it over in Windows 1.0 .

use

The button is increasingly being implemented in websites in order to solve the problem with small screens on mobile devices ( smartphones , tablets, etc.) and the resulting reduced space for navigation. Despite being easy to recognize, this element is very controversial among web designers ; Disadvantages, which are often mentioned, are the hiding of the options and the associated additional effort of another click to reach the desired point in the menu.

Some desktop - application programs icon replaces the menu bar , for example, Firefox and Thunderbird . In Windows 10 , it was used again within the start menu from the Anniversary Update in August 2016. Under Linux , there are interfaces with a focus on space economy that consistently implement the concept on all kinds of devices - for example, Unity ; in this case, however, a gear is used as a symbol.

The Unicode characters ☰ (U + 2630; TRIGRAM FOR HEAVEN ) and ≡ (U + 2261; IDENTICAL TO ) are similar to the hamburger menu icon and can be used as a substitute. In HTML they are represented by "& # x2630;" and "& # x2261;".
