The Nokia Lumia 920 is a smartphone of the Lumia series from the Finnish manufacturer Nokia , which has replaced the previously released Lumia 900 as the new Nokia top model with various improvements . It has been available since early November 2012. On May 14, 2013, the successor model Nokia Lumia 925 was presented, which is a quarter lighter with an AMOLED display and aluminum cover.

Technical specifications

After Lumia 900 , Lumia 800 , Lumia 710 and Lumia 610, the Lumia 920 is the fifth Nokia smartphone model with the Windows Phone operating system from Microsoft , with version 8 being used for the first time . The device is housed in a monoblock polycarbonate housing with the dimensions 130.3 mm × 70.8 mm × 10.7 mm and has a 1.5 GHz dual core processor from Qualcomm ( Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960) , a RAM of 1 GB and a non-expandable mass storage of 32 GB. In terms of appearance, it is very similar to the first model in the series, the Lumia 800, but it is larger and better equipped. The Lumia 920 offers a 4.5 inch IPS touchscreen with ClearBlack technology and a resolution of 1,280 × 768  pixels ( WXGA ) with a pixel density of 332 ppi and a 1.2 megapixel camera on the front and an 8 , 7 megapixel digital camera on the back.

The Lumia 920 was initially available in yellow, red, gray, white and black, and in the USA for AT&T also in cyan. Since March 2013, the device has also been generally available in the color cyan.

The Lumia 920 supports GSM and WCDMA / UMTS networks. LTE cellular connections are also possible in the frequency bands 1 (2100 MHz), 3 (1800 MHz), 7 (2600 MHz), 8 (900 MHz) and 20 (800 MHz), but these result in higher power consumption and thus the Shorten battery life. Data connections can be established in GSM networks via EDGE , with UMTS connections via HSDPA + with a maximum of 42 Mbps and with LTE with a maximum possible data rate of 100 Mbps; WLANs are supported up to the 802.11n standard.

Functions

As the first Windows 8 smartphone, the free and full-fledged navigation software Nokia Drive has been revised for the Lumia 920 ; The country-specific maps can be downloaded to the device via WLAN or cellular network, which enables offline navigation. In addition, the Nokia Maps and Nokia Transportation applications were updated. The Nokia City Lens app is new, adding augmented reality functions to the map application .

Introduction and sales

The Nokia Lumia 920 was officially presented on September 5, 2012 together with the Lumia 820 at a Nokia and Microsoft press conference in New York by CEOs Stephen Elop and Steve Ballmer . The sale started in November 2012.

In Germany , sales at Vodafone , Mobilcom-debitel and in free trade began on November 5, 2012.

In Switzerland , sales will start at the beginning of December 2012 exclusively at Swisscom .

criticism

When the device was presented, the camera's optical image stabilizer was praised and videos were shown that suggested it had been shot with the Lumia 920. When it became known that the footage had been taken with a professional film camera, Nokia apologized for the incident. Nokia subsequently offered those who uncovered the incident the opportunity to check the quality of night shots themselves. The photo and video quality could then be tested with prototypes from third parties.

The readership of the mobile communications specialist magazine Areamobile.de voted the Lumia 920 "Smartphone of the Year 2012". The magazine's test in November 2012 gave an overall rating of 88% (very good).

In the test by Connect magazine, the device scores particularly well in the areas of housing, display and camera. There were small deductions for the heavy weight and for the low volume in the direction of transmission when telephoning.

The online portal Netzwelt also subjected the Lumia 920 to a detailed test and came to a consistently positive conclusion.

In the test edition 3/2013 by Stiftung Warentest , the Lumia 920 was rated as one of the best Windows Phone 8 smartphones with a quality rating of good (2.4). But it does not achieve the quality of the best Android and iOS devices.
