The .NET Compact Framework was a descendant of the .NET Framework , which is specially designed for use on mobile devices such as smartphones and PDAs using the Windows Embedded Compact operating system . It is intended to make it easier for developers to write applications for mobile devices or to port them to them.
With the replacement of Windows Embedded Compact by Windows IoT , the framework was also replaced by .NET Core .
From a technical point of view, the Compact Framework is a runtime environment or a class library (see Framework ). Compared to the normal .NET Framework for the PC, this version has been reduced by a larger number of classes that are not required for small devices or that take up too much memory.
The .NET Compact Framework 1.0 was introduced in conjunction with Microsoft Visual Studio 2003. The Compact Framework from Pocket PC 2000 ( Windows CE 3.0) and Windows CE.NET 4.1 is supported . Programs can be developed using the .NET languages Visual Basic .NET and C # . The "Smart Device Extensions" (SDE) for Visual Studio, which, for example, can emulate a handheld on the computer, help with the development for mobile devices .
