The Xperia M (model number C1904 / C1905) was announced in June 2013. The exterior of this model is based on the omnibalance design of the Xperia Z and the typical Sony Arc design. It has a large notification LED at the bottom and supports NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 . There is also a dual SIM variant of the Xperia M ("Xperia M dual", model number C2004 / C2005).

The Xperia M was delivered with the Android version 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with Sony UI . An update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has been available since March 2014 . On September 10, 2014, update support from Sony was officially discontinued.

Display

The Sony Xperia M has a 4 inch (10.16 cm) TFT - LC display with a resolution of 480 × 854 pixels (approx. 245 ppi pixel density ) and a color space of 16 million colors. According to measurements from various trade magazines, the brightness of the display is around 432  cd / , which is sufficient to operate the smartphone in direct sunlight without major problems.
The touch screen also supports multi-touch - gestures with up to four fingers.

camera

The Xperia M allows HDR photos and offers a 5 MP main camera, which - in addition to the 0.3 MP front camera - further features such as a flash with pulsating LED , autofocus , focusing and recording by typing, geotagging , an image stabilizer, Red-eye reduction, self-timer and face and smile detection.

design

The appearance of the Xperia M consists largely of polycarbonate and has a mixture of the "OmniBalance" design of the Xperia Z series and the design of the earlier Xperia arc design line. It has a large LED notification bar on the lower edge of the front, which can light up in different colors. Unlike the smartphones of the Xperia Z series and successors to the Xperia M, such as the Xperia M5 , the Xperia M is neither waterproof nor dustproof. However, this also means that no flaps are required for its connections.

Evaluation and criticism

In expert tests such as B. Connect magazine particularly praised the endurance and design, but criticized the too small, internal memory.

Dust and waterproof according to IP68 (M2 Aqua), NFC , Wifi and LTE, "OmniBalance" design, "Stamina" mode (energy saving mode), microSD card slot, second microphone for active noise suppression, DLNA , USB OTG

The Sony Xperia M2 was presented on February 24, 2014 at the GSMA Mobile World Congress together with the Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2 Tablet as the successor to the Xperia M. It has the typical Sony "OmniBalance" design, which is very similar to that of the Xperia Z2. As in this one, the battery is now permanently installed and the back is no longer removable. The differences compared to the predecessor mainly concern the changed design, the faster processor and the display, which has a slightly higher resolution but results in a lower pixel density due to the larger display. The model supports the cellular standards NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy.

The Xperia M2 was delivered with the Android version 4.3 Jelly Bean with Sony UI . An update to Android 4.4.4 KitKat has been available since November 2014 . In September 2015 it got an update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop . According to Sony, it will not get an update to the next version Android 6.0 Marshmallow .

Display

The Sony Xperia M2 has a 4.8 inch (12.19 cm) IPS -LC display with a resolution of 480 × 960 pixels (approx. 229 ppi pixel density ) and a color space of 16 million colors. According to measurements taken by various trade magazines, the brightness of the display is around 422  cd / , which is sufficient to operate the smartphone in direct sunlight without major problems.
The touch screen also supports multi-touch - gestures with up to four fingers.

camera

The Xperia M2 allows HDR photos and offers an 8 MP main camera, which - in addition to the 0.3 MP front camera - further features such as a flash with pulsing LED , autofocus , focusing and recording by typing, geotagging , an image stabilizer, Red-eye reduction, self-timer and face and smile detection. The sensor is based on the Exmor RS technology, which is known from the Z series.

design

The appearance of the Xperia M2 is based on the "OmniBalance" design of the Xperia Z2 . The back and the frame are not made of glass and metal, but of polycarbonate or plastic. The speakers can be found on the lower edge and occupy this completely. Like its predecessor, its notification LED is located on the lower edge, but it has shrunk a bit. The camera on the back is placed in the middle and the flash is attached to the right.

Xperia M2 Aqua

On September 19, 2014, Sony introduced the Xperia M2 Aqua . There are the following differences compared to the normal M2:

  • it is certified against dust and water according to the IP68 standard
  • As a result, the micro-USB port and the jack port were provided with flaps
  • the purple color option has been replaced by copper
  • the back is no longer shiny and glass-like, but matt
  • the sides are no longer shiny, but look like brushed metal
  • the recommended retail price is € 50 higher than that of the Xperia M2. So this is 249 €.

Evaluation and criticism

In expert tests such as B. Connect magazine particularly praised the endurance and design, but criticized the high weight and the built-in battery. The transmission and reception performance of the M2 even outshines many, much more expensive models of the time. According to GSMArena.com, a battery charge lasts longer than average and the design is unusual for a cell phone in this price segment, it has a "real character". In contrast, the photo quality and the lack of support for some audio and video codecs were criticized . The M2 Aqua, on the other hand, fills a niche that has not been occupied by any manufacturer for a long time, namely that of a waterproof cell phone in the cheaper segment.

dust and waterproof according to IP68

The Sony Xperia M4 Aqua was presented on March 2, 2015 as part of the MWC as the successor to the Xperia M2 Aqua. The exterior of this model is based on the typical Sony "OmniBalance" design of the Xperia Z3. It is also characterized by its IP68 protection against dust and water.

The Xperia M4 Aqua came with Android version 5.0 Lollipop with Sony UI . An update to version 6.0.1 Marshmallow was distributed in Germany.

Display

The Sony Xperia M4 Aqua has a 5 inch (12.7 cm) IPS -LC display with a resolution of 720 × 1280 pixels (approx. 294 ppi pixel density ) and a color space of 16 million colors. According to measurements from various trade magazines, the brightness of the display is around 501  cd / , which is sufficient to operate the smartphone in direct sunlight without any major problems. The touch screen also supports multi-touch - gestures with up to four fingers.

camera

With the 1 / 2.3 inch Exmor RS for mobile sensor, the camera allows HDR video recording. In addition, the 13 MP main camera - in addition to the 5.1 MP front camera, which is also able to take 88 ° wide-angle shots - offers further performance features such as a flash with pulsating LED , autofocus , focusing and recording by typing, geotagging , an image stabilizer, Red-eye reduction, self-timer and face and smile detection.

design

The appearance of the Xperia M4 Aqua is similar to the "OmniBalance" design of the Xperia Z3 . The back and the frame are not made of glass and metal, but of polycarbonate . On the upper edge there is a notification LED from left to right, the front camera, the Sony logo and above that the telephone receiver . The corresponding microphone is at the bottom. The telephone receiver and microphone mimic the design of the stereo - speaker of the Z3. At the top of the left side is the micro-USB port for charging the cell phone and transferring data between other devices. The latter also works via Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC. The speaker is on the lower side, along with another microphone. On the right side there is a two-stage camera button, the volume control and the typical Sony button for switching the device on and off. The upper side houses the 3.5 mm jack connection for accessories such as headphones . The main camera of the smartphone is on the back, like the Xperia Z3, in the upper left corner and the flash underneath. There is also an NFC logo on the upper section of the back, another Sony logo in the middle and an Xperia logo in the lower section. It has similar dimensions to the Z3, but a display that is 0.2 inches smaller and, as a result, larger display bezels.

strength

The housing of the Xperia M4 Aqua is waterproof and dustproof according to the IP68 standard. This means that dust in any form and sinking into 1.5 m deep water for 30 minutes will not cause any damage.

Bibi-Phone

On October 21, 2015, Deutsche Telekom, in cooperation with Bianca Heinicke, presented a special version of the M4 Aqua called "Sony Xperia M4 Aqua Bibi-Phone Edition". It is marketed as "the smartphone for Bibi fans" and, therefore, is aimed primarily at fans of her YouTube - channel "BibisBeautyPalace" and its Twitter - Accounts .

The differences to the normal Xperia M4 Aqua are

  • a portrait of Heinicke and a signature in pink on the back
  • Ringtones from Bianca Heinicke, which can be downloaded from the “Xperia Lounge” app
  • that it is only available in white with 8 GB of internal memory in Germany
  • the price of 249.95
  • a slightly modified product image on the packaging, which also shows the back

Evaluation and criticism

In expert tests such as For example, the magazine " Connect " praised the display and the design in particular, but criticized the small, internal memory and the long time it took to charge the battery.

Price development

On January 25, 2016, Sony lowered the RRP of the M4 Aqua in Germany from € 279 to € 229.
