software
The operating system of the Xperia arc S is Google's Android version 2.3.4 ("Gingerbread") in the delivery state .
An update to 4.0.3 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") followed in January 2012 and an update to Android 4.0.4 in April 2012.
Sony's support page says that Android version 4.0.4 from April 2012 will be the last and final version. So this smartphone is officially no longer supplied with updates by Sony.
However, thanks to projects like LegacyXperia it is through so-called custom ROMs possible to install versions to Android 6 ( "marshmallow") despite the low internal memory by means of outsourcing of databases on an external SD card on the Xperia arc S. First attempts to install Android 7 ("Nougat") have also been successful. Since root rights are required to install such a ROM, you lose the Sony warranty rights when you carry out the installation.
Pre-installed applications

- Google talk
- Gmail
- Google Calendar
- Google 3D gallery
- Google Maps with Street View
reception
Focus Online praised the camera quality, the design and the display size of the Sony Xperia Arc S and criticized the sound quality and judged that the previous model, the Sony Xperia Arc, was more worthwhile due to its significantly lower price.
