Among bodybuilders is meant companies that commercial vehicles equipped with special constructions. Commercial vehicle manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz , Volkswagen or MAN AG produce standardized chassis. In the case of trucks, this means the vehicle frame with drive train, axles and cab. The structure available from the manufacturer often consists of a flatbed with a tarpaulin cover for the transport of piece goods or a tipping structure made of steel for bulk goods and can also be permanently installed with the chassis, as in mobile homes or special vehicles .

Body builders are so-called multi-level manufacturers. In multi-stage vehicles, the body builder uses a chassis from a chassis manufacturer, e.g. B. also in the construction of motorhomes . It is stipulated that the vehicle identification number of the 1st manufacturer is retained on the registration certificate . This gives you the chassis manufacturer in the chassis number, the manufacturer designation and the manufacturer key number, the body manufacturer then appears in (D.1) and (D.3).

Superstructures for different industries and applications such as garbage superstructures, superstructures for sweepers, concrete mixers and pumps, fire engines, ambulance transports or the police are manufactured and assembled on the basis of a chassis by specialized manufacturers (usually bodywork companies and vehicle construction companies ).
