Erik Lundqvist
Erik Hjalmar Lundqvist (born June 29, 1908 in Grängesberg , Ludvika municipality , † January 7, 1963 ibid) was a Swedish athlete who was active as a javelin thrower around 1930. He was the first javelin thrower to exceed the 70-meter mark.
Career
At the VIII Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 , he won the gold medal with 66.60 m, ahead of the Hungarian Béla Szepes (65.26 m) and the Norwegian Olav Sunde (63.97 m).
After his best performance of 62.70 m in 1927, he climbed to 71.01 m in the 1928 Olympic year and thus improved the world record of the Finn Eino Penttilä by more than a meter. This achievement was surpassed as a world record two years later by the Finn Matti Järvinen , who improved him to 71.57 m. As the Swedish national record, however, it lasted much longer: Lennart Atterwall only improved it to 71.72 m in 1936 . Also in 1928 Lundqvist won his only Swedish championship with 67.39 m. On the IX. He did not take part in the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , but with a performance of 65.95 m he was still in 10th place on the world's best list of the year.
