Béla Szepes
Béla Szepes [ ˈbeːlɒ ˈsɛpɛʃ ] (born September 5, 1903 in Igló ; † June 20, 1986 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian athlete and skier who was successful as a javelin thrower in the late 1920s .
When he took part in the Olympics in Amsterdam in 1928 , Szepes met two world record holders: the Finn Eino Penttilä , who had set the world record at 69.88 m last year, and the Swede Erik Lundqvist , who three days after the Amsterdam Games became the first thrower on earth Should surpass the 70 m mark. The Hungarian brought a personal best of 64.80 m from 1927. He was able to exceed this distance in the qualification by 46 cm, but did not come close to Lundqvist, who also achieved his victory distance of 66.60 m in the qualification. Szepes won silver with 65.26 m ahead of the Norwegian Olav Sunde (bronze with 63.97 m). World record holder Pentillä had no chance to intervene in the fight for the medals despite a good 63.20 m and ended up in 6th place.
Béla Szepes was the four-time Hungarian Nordic Combined Champion and one of the best Hungarian ski jumpers. He was also a cross-country skier and Olympic participant in the 1924 Winter Games in Chamonix and in 1928 in St. Moritz .
From 1926 to 1933 Szepes worked in Berlin as a journalist and sports caricaturist.
