Cy Young (athlete)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cy Young (actually Cyrus J. Young Jr .; * July 23, 1928 in Modesto ; † December 6, 2017 there ) was an American javelin thrower who became Olympic champion in 1952 .

He is the only American who could win Olympic gold in this discipline. At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , he and his compatriot Bill Miller ended Finnish supremacy when they left Toivo Hyytiäinen only the bronze medal. The Finn was the most consistent thrower - five of his six attempts were further than 70 meters - but only the two Americans surpassed the 72 and 73 meter mark:

  • Young: 73.78-72.80-71.93
  • Miller: 72.46-71.65-70.45

Four years later, Young won his only US championship with a good 75.57 m and threw at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 in qualifying with 74.76 m Olympic record. In the final, however, he failed: His best distance of 68.45 m brought him only to 11th place. But even his personal best of 79.16 m achieved in the same year would not have earned him a medal in Melbourne, as the third-placed, Wiktor Zybulenko from the USSR, 79.50 m threw.
