The VDL Groep , based in Eindhoven, is a Dutch industrial group and family company. It has 79 subsidiaries in 16 countries with a total of over 10,600 employees.
In addition to its activities in mechanical and plant engineering and as a supplier in the fields of metalworking, plastics processing, surface treatment, mechatronic systems and modular construction, the VDL Groep is primarily known as a manufacturer of buses .
history
In 1953, Pieter van der Leegte founded a metalworking company in Eindhoven. The company name VDL emerged from the initials of his surname. Thanks to numerous takeovers, his son Wim van der Leegte has been able to expand the company significantly since 1979.
In 2006 the VDL Groep bought the Philips Enabling Technologies Group (ETG) from Philips . ETG is a manufacturer, developer and supplier of precision components and mechatronics for use in the semiconductor industry as well as medical and solar technology.
VDL Bus & Coach
The VDL Bus & Coach division comprises the bus business of the VDL Groep, which began in 1993 with the acquisition of a majority stake in DAF's bus division .
Berkhof , a Dutch manufacturer of coaches and buses, has been part of VDL since 1998. In 1992 Berkhof took over the minibus manufacturer Kusters. The Belgian bus manufacturer Jonckheere followed in 1994 .
The Dutch coach manufacturer Bova has also been part of VDL since 2003 .
With the introduction of the VDL Citea bus , a further development of the Berkhof Ambassador, and the VDL Futura touring coach, the successor to the Bova Futura , the uniform VDL brand replaces the traditional manufacturer names.
VDL Bus & Coach now also manufactures electric buses . In July 2014, the Cologne transport company ordered 8 VDL Citea SLFA Electric buses. This made KVB the first company in Germany to receive this newly developed type of bus.
In April 2015 the company sold five Citea Electric buses to Stadtwerke Münster . At the end of 2015, the South-East Brabant public transport concession area placed an order for 40 Citea SLFA Electric buses . These are 18.1 m long articulated buses . Their delivery was scheduled for December 2016. After winning the tender, 13 copies of the same model are to be delivered as a complete system including charging stations to Stadtwerke Osnabrück for the electrification of local bus line 41 by the end of 2018 .

Key figures
In 2010, 925 buses, 535 coaches, 243 chassis as well as 232 midi and minibuses were sold. This put VDL in sixth place in Western Europe with a market share of 4.7%. The main sales areas are France, the Benelux countries, Germany and Great Britain.
VDL Nedcar
By VDL NedCar are since 2014 in the Dutch Born on behalf of BMW two car models of the Mini (3-door and since 2014 convertible) made. Production of the BMW X1 also started in 2017 .
