The MAN ND 202 is a low-floor - double-decker bus in the commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN (suspension components) and ABB Henschel (former Waggon Union , setup), in Berlin as a city bus was used.

Interior in the lower deck

After production of the double-decker type MAN SD 202 was discontinued in 1992 , the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) looked for a successor model. This should be designed in particular in a low-floor design.

In 1994 MAN and ABB Henschel delivered the prototype (car number 3000) of the new double-decker bus known as the ND 202. It was not only the first low-floor double-decker bus for city traffic, it also had other innovations, including a third inner pivoting door behind the rear axle, additional passenger information systems in the form of liquid crystal displays , a vehicle body made of aluminum and a paint job in the then new BVG colors ( Sun yellow with a white roof and gray apron). The (exit) stairs from the upper deck down to the third door were placed in the stern above the engine.

After intensive testing on several lines and passenger surveys on the new model, series delivery of only 86 vehicles took place in 1995. The most noticeable changes in the outdoor area compared to the prototype were the elimination of the last window in the lower deck on the left and a new design of the cold air intake grille on the right.

The disadvantage was the greater height of 4.12 m compared to 4.06 m of the other double decker types. This led to restrictions in line use. Many passengers found the relatively loud engine noises particularly annoying on the lower deck. The diesel engine with 157 kW (213 hp), which was also used in the MAN NL 202 , and a Voith automatic transmission were housed there in the rear .

The MAN lettering between the headlights was later removed from most of the vehicles; this area was now painted yellow with a stylized Brandenburg Gate .

Until the successor Lion's City DD was introduced in 2004, the ND 202 was the BVG's most modern double-decker bus.

After the delivery of the DL09 series of the Lion's City DD in 2009, the DNs have become dispensable. The last day of operation of the old vehicles was February 12, 2010.

This type of double-decker bus is now also used as a city tour bus in various cities. In December 2015, a vehicle of this type, preserved in a museum at Traditionsbus GmbH Berlin , was used on a test basis by the local transport company traffiQ in Frankfurt am Main to determine the acceptance among passengers. This and other tests in 2016 with the MAN Lion's City DD A39 were intended to check whether double-decker buses could be used again in the future (as was the case from 1967 to 1976) to increase capacity on certain lines in Frankfurt on which articulated buses could be used for reasons of space was out of the question.
