The SD 202 is a double-decker bus with MAN chassis components, which was designed by Waggon Union for city traffic in what was then West Berlin .
In 1982 a prototype was presented to the public as the successor to the MAN SD 200 for the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). Two further prototypes followed in 1983 and 1985. Series production began in 1986.
The double-decker was based on the standard regular-service buses of the second generation. The vehicles were built on MAN chassis by Waggon Union. 468 SD 202 were delivered to the BVG. A few other vehicles were produced for the Lübeck-Travemünder Verkehrsgesellschaft (LVG); these vehicles were given a longer axle ratio because they were also used on expressways for the main route Lübeck-Travemünde. In Berlin the SD 202 were in-house with D and year of construction, z. B. "D 86".
From 1988 the SD 202 were delivered with a slightly modified interior: The space on the lower deck compared to the rear door was increased by eliminating a row of seats, and the handrail in the area of the central door was also eliminated. This allowed wheelchair users with an accompanying person to use these buses. This is why these wagons have been marked as “handicapped-friendly” with a corresponding pictogram on the front.
Production ceased in 1992, followed by the MAN ND 202 low-floor double-decker in 1995 . From 2001 onwards, most of the newer, “handicapped-friendly” SD-202 buses, as well as some older SD 202s from 1987, have been refurbished by the BVG. This was intended to extend the service life of these buses until there were enough new MAN ND 313 double-deckers and articulated buses available.
In recent years, the rear bench seats on the upper deck of numerous cars have been set up differently instead of being arranged in rows, so that all-round seating was created and the backrests were directed towards the walls of the car (so-called conference seating). The last BVG deployment of an SD 202 took place on December 28, 2009. As of January 16, 2010, two SD 202 vehicles, the 3591 (D 87) and 3928 (D 92) cars, were registered with the BVG.
Some vehicles in this series - like some of their predecessors - achieved service lives of twenty years and more in regular service. Many SD 202 were converted - partly by the BVG - into sightseeing buses with open or openable roofs. Occasionally, these buses are still visible in regular service (as of January 2011). The sightseeing buses can be found in Berlin and many other cities at home and abroad, where they are used for city tours and the like. Ä. Be used.
