Selenis Leyva (born May 26, 1972 in Baracoa ) is a Cuban - American actress . Her best-known role is that of Gloria Mendoza in the web series Orange Is the New Black , which she has played since 2013.

life and career

Selenis Leyva was born in Baracoa , Cuban , but grew up in the Bronx . Her ancestors are of both Cuban and Dominican descent. She gained her first acting experience in plays on Off-Broadway . Her first television role was in 1999 in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit . Two years later followed a recurring role in the sitcom Taina . From 2004 to 2010 she played Mariluz Rivera in Law & Order in a total of 19 episodes . In 1999, 2001 and 2004 she had already starred in other roles in the series. However, Leyva only gained greater fame through the role of Gloria Mendoza in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black . After she was part of the supporting cast in the first two seasons, her role will be expanded to a leading role for further seasons.
