The Following is an American thriller series starring Kevin Bacon and aired on Fox TV from January 21, 2013 to May 18, 2015 . It consists of 3 seasons with 15 episodes each. In May 2015, Fox announced the cancellation after three seasons.

The series tells the story of convicted serial killer Joe Carroll and former FBI agent Ryan Hardy. Carroll romanticizes death and, before being arrested by Hardy, killed female students attending his literature classes. The inspiration for his murders came from the works of the famous American writer Edgar Allan Poe . However, after Carroll succeeds in breaking out of prison, but is caught again very quickly, the investigators come across a cult that he has built up out of prison via the Internet and the activities of his followers who commit crimes in his name.

The idea for the series comes from screenwriter Kevin Williamson , who has worked for films like Scream! ' I know what you did last summer or did shows like Dawson's Creek and Vampire Diaries .

action

Edgar Allan Poe inspires Joe Carroll in his murders.

season 1

At the beginning of the series, convicted serial killer Joe Carroll breaks out of Virginia jail to complete the work he has begun. The only survivor of his streak of murders of female students, Sarah Fuller, is placed under police protection after the escape is announced and the former FBI agent Ryan Hardy is confronted with his past as Hardy was actively involved in the case almost ten years ago and a book about it published the series of murders at the time. Claire, Carroll's ex-wife and mother of his son Joey, is now also placed under police protection. Hardy and FBI agents Mike Weston and Jennifer Mason must find out that a prison guard helped Carroll escape and is apparently being trained as a murderer. When a young woman in full public suicide commits Hardy begins to make the assumption that Carroll the Internet that help could have used to gather a following, he can carry out his plans. It turns out that quite a few followers of the cult stand ready as sleepers on certain triggers, such as For example, poems read to the press by attorney Carrols to carry out pre-determined plans.

Sarah is kidnapped by two followers she believed to be gay neighbors, and finally brutally tortured and murdered by Carroll. Hardy is too late to save her, but Carroll allows him to arrest and interrogate him, where he tells him that this is just the beginning. At the same time, another supporter of Carrolls, who pretended to be a nanny for his ex-wife, kidnapped his son and meets with Sarah's supposedly gay neighbors in order to find a hiding place with them in a house away from the city.

Special Agent Debra Parker, an expert on alternative religions, is involved in finding Carroll's son and bringing him back to his mother while Jordy, Carroll's escapist in prison, commits his first murder by bringing three female students into their fraternity house kills them and cuts out their eyes, just like Carroll once did his victims. Claire decides to face her ex-husband in a conversation to find out where her son is, but the conversation gets out of hand when Carroll attacks his wife and chokes her. Meanwhile, Emma Hill, who pretended to be Joey's nanny, drives Joey and the gay neighbors to a remote house and tells Joey that his mother asked her to go there and not call her. It turns out that Emma has a relationship with one of the men, Jacob, and the relationship of the other of the two men is viewed with displeasure. Hardy and Weston find Emma Hill and her old address during their investigation. When the two go to the house, Hardy is attacked inside by someone wearing an Edgar Allan Poe mask. The man escapes and finally sets fire to a citizen on the street in public who later turns out to be a critic who wrote a bad review of Carroll's book. Hardy and his team come across Rick Kester, another Carroll supporter, and his wife, Maggie, who comes to the station and tearfully testifies that Rick has already attacked them. When Maggie is due to be escorted home and monitored by Troy Riley, Jordy's testimony tells Agent Parker that Maggie is another follower. Parker is too late to warn Riley, however, and Riley is killed by Maggie. Jordy outed Maggie as a follower because Parker promised him he could see Carroll. However, when Jordy realizes that won't be the case, he commits suicide by swallowing his bandage and eventually suffocating. At the same time, Claire receives an email from Emma, Paul and Jacob containing a video. The video shows how Emma and Jacob trick Joey into killing a mouse and beetle.

The third kidnapper, Paul, is slowly but surely feeling passed over and betrayed by Jacob, as their pretended relationship has taken on new dimensions over the years. He kidnaps a supermarket employee named Megan. When Emma finds out, she tells Jacob to kill her, but he lets her escape instead. However, their escape fails and Paul and Emma take them prisoner again. After Maggie is outed by Parker as a supporter of Carroll and Hardy kills her husband while trying to escape, she plans her revenge. She kidnaps Hardy's sister and tells him to go see her. Maggie wants Hardy's sister to suffer by killing her brother in front of her eyes. But Mike Weston can stop this and save Hardy and his sister by shooting Maggie.

Shortly afterwards, Joey manages to get to a phone while Emma, Paul and Jacob are three in bed. He gives his mother some vital information before Paul can pull him off the phone. Almost at the same time, Olivia Warren, Carroll's attorney, is seen in the department, who then visits Claire and gives her some instructions from Carroll, which she should follow if she wants to see Joey again. However, he escapes from the house and is followed by Emma up to a few neighbors. The neighbors call the police even before Paul kills them. Hardy can use the information to locate the house. At the same time, Hank Flynn appears at Emma and Co. to bring the three and Joey out of the house. However, Hank is shot dead by Hardy and is then threatened with a gun by Paul.

season 2

A year after Joe Carroll's death, Ryan Hardy remains obsessed with him and the cult he was able to build from prison. When a series of murders begins on Carrol's anniversary, Hardy has to devote himself again to the sect and face it.

The Carroll Cult

Various people from the most diverse origins belong to the cult, from computer technicians to ex-military. What they all have in common is that they have had a difficult past. Emma, for example, was dominated for a long time by her mother, who eventually kills her on Caroll's initiative. She converts her house into a kind of shrine in which Poe and Carroll are worshiped. Common to all cult supporters is their fanatical devotion to Carroll, one of them committing suicide in prison. Since he is handcuffed, he loosens his bandage with his mouth and eats it, eventually suffocating.

All follow plans that Carroll made in prison. In order not to arouse suspicion, they live with false identities for years in order to get into a position to do their part in the plan.

Production method and characteristics

Conception

Kevin Williamson presented the first drafts for the series to his home broadcaster of his favorite series 24 . He compared Hardy to Jack Bauer. He told journalist Maerz that he sometimes lay awake at night and cried because of Jack Bauer and that there was some of Jack Bauer in his character of Ryan Hardy. Even then, Williamson was certain that the series would be controversial. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Joe Earley, chairman of Fox Broadcasting, replied that the station is proud to bring a large, intense series to the general public. He promised even then that the series would be great and full of tension.

Casting

Williamson told his agent a desire to have an actor like Kevin Bacon play as Ryan Hardy. His agent suggested Kevin Bacon directly and sent Bacon the script. Bacon had been looking for a television engagement for four years that he would like to do. Jeananne Goossen was eventually cast in the role of FBI agent Jennifer Mason. However, the role was replaced by Annie Parisse as Debra Parker after the pilot episode .

Narrative style

The content of the individual episodes builds on one another. In each episode, different storylines are told continuously. One storyline tells the story of Ryan Hardy, while another focuses on three followers of Joe Carroll. Each episode contains flashbacks of individual characters in certain situations, which can be easily assigned to a certain time by the display of the year.
