Waterwitch ( water witch ) was the name of the first Swedish steamship. It was also the first steamship with a propeller .
The English emigrant Samuel Owen equipped a ship in Stockholm in 1816 with a steam engine and a four-bladed propeller and named it Waterwitch. Later the name of the ship with the Swedish name Vattentrollet ( water troll ) was mentioned. In the literature one also finds the name Stockholmshäxan ( Stockholm witch ). Since Owen had only moderate success with the propeller, he fitted his next ship with paddle wheels, as was customary at the time.
