New Spider-Man ( English Spider-Man or Spider-Man: The Animated Series ) is an American animated series based on the comic book adventures of Spider-Man published by Marvel . It was the first animated series to be produced by the then newly founded Marvel Films animation company. The series was animated by the Japanese animation studio Tokyo Movie Shinsha . In Germany, the series was broadcast for the first time on November 19, 1994 on RTL .

action

Teenage boy Peter Parker, bitten by a radioactive spider , has to face many crooks and super villains in his hometown of New York , but also has to defend himself against the press and the false reports of the Daily Bugle.

Production & publication

FOX , the original broadcaster of the series in the USA, wanted the series to deal with the social problems of young people, such as peace between different countries ("The Day of the Chameleon"), cults ("The Battle of the Powers" ), the bad influence of street gangs on their members ("The Young Robert" and "The Return of the Tombstone"), inalienable rights ("The Fall"), drug addiction ("A Worthy Successor") and the problems with stalkers ("Hydroman ").

In order to make the locations of the series appear as true to the original as possible, many illustrations of the New York skyline and many maps of the city itself were consulted. Originally, the city and many of the backgrounds in the series were supposed to be recreated using CGI , while vehicles and characters were still animated in the traditional way. For cost reasons, however, only a small part of New York was recreated in this way and the production team was also forced to reuse many scenes from earlier episodes, which often resulted in a deja vu .

As with Batman: The Animated Series , depictions of violence were also censored in New Spider-Man . Realistic weapons were never allowed to be shown and were replaced by lasers in every episode , but Cletus Cassidy throws a realistic-looking hand grenade in the episode “Venom's Return” and in “The Six Forgotten Warriors” you can also see a gangster with one in a flashback fire real machine gun . With a few exceptions, Spider-Man and the rest of the characters were not allowed to strike with their bare fists. Furthermore, blood was never allowed to be shown, as a result the vampire Morbius drinks plasma in the original version, but in the German synchronized version this was changed back to blood. Despite this small change, Morbius still does not ingest blood by biting the throat, but instead has suction cups on his hands that he places on the face of his victims. People only die in a few cases, mostly they are saved in time or disappear through dimensional holes in other dimensions. Swear words are always avoided and conversations about death are either played down or downplayed, so that the question “Is he ...” is started but is interrupted in good time by the answer “No!”. The personalities of some characters were also changed in the series. So Cletus Kassidy / Carnage went from a serial killer to a simple mental patient and as Carnage he is not allowed to kill people as in the comics, but simply drains their energy.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11th in New York City, the episode "The Day of the Chameleon" underwent extensive changes in its final act: The World Trade Center was removed along with a large part of the New York skyline, as was a helicopter that fell into a skyscraper flies and explodes as well as many similar scenarios. Dialogues in the episode were removed and replaced with others from later episodes or repeated over and over again.

Episode list

The double episode "Mutants versus Mutants" is a crossover between the New Spider-Man series and the X-Men series , which is also located in the Marvel Animated Universe. For this purpose, the speakers of the original version of the X-Men series were flown from Canada to Los Angeles so that they could speak to their counterparts in the New Spider-Man series as well.
In the German version, almost all the speakers in the X-Men series were hired for their roles, only Professor X was spoken by
Thomas Rauscher instead of Christoph Lindert . In the three-part episode saga “The Challenge”, heroes from other Marvel Animated Universe series also made an appearance: the fantastic four from the series Die Fantastischen Vier with new adventures , Iron Man from the series The Invincible Iron Man and Storm from the series X-Men . Here, too, attention was paid to continuity to the other series and only had to change two roles: Johnny Storm (the human torch) is spoken by Pascal Breuer instead of Christian Tramitz and Iron Man by Bernd Simon instead of Crock Krumbiegel .
