Chuck McCann (* 2 September 1934 in Brooklyn , New York as Charles John Thomas McCann , † 8. April 2018 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor , comedian and television host .

life and career

Chuck McCann, son of music arranger Val McCann, wrote comedic lyrics while he was in high school. At the age of 17 he was already performing as a comedian in night clubs. He first made a name for himself on New York television in the 1950s when he hosted television programs for children such as Let's Have Fun (from 1959). He also appeared frequently on the side of the well-known comedian Steve Allen in his shows. At the end of the 1960s he moved to Hollywood, where he then worked on a total of over 160 film and television productions.

McCann was mostly used in comedic supporting roles in Hollywood, as he "with his plump face and constant grin" automatically embodied "wit". With the portrayal of the deaf Greek immigrant Spiros Antonapoulos in the literary film adaptation The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968), however, he proved that he could also work convincingly in completely serious roles. One of his few leading roles was the title character in the 1970 comedy Der Filmvorführer , in which Rodney Dangerfield also made his film debut. McCann was seen in three of Mel Brooks' films in minor supporting roles.

From the 1960s until shortly before his death, McCann was only heard with his very versatile voice in many cartoons and series. In Cool McCool , for example, he spoke the title character and in the series DuckTales - News from Duckburg he was heard as a loyal servant Johann at the end of the 1980s .

McCann's love for the comedian duo Laurel and Hardy , which began when he was 12 years old and had a telephone friendship with Stan Laurel , also shaped his career . He later ran a television show that featured film clips from the comedian duo and was also a co-founder of the Laurel and Hardy fan club Sons of the Desert . For many years he imitated Oliver Hardy , for example in commercials and show appearances, with changing partners such as Jim McGeorge , Larry Harmon and Dick Van Dyke in the stan role.

Chuck McCann was married three times and had three children. From 1977 until his death he was married to Elizabeth A. Fanning, a former manager of the William Morris Agency . He died of heart failure in April 2018 at the age of 83 .
