Set during the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s, the film is about a dog named Buck who is stolen from his native California and brought to the Yukon as a sled dog , where he befriends John and begins to change his way of life.

action

During the late 19th century gold rush, Buck, a great St. Bernard / Scotch Collie, lived contentedly with his master, Judge Miller, in Santa Clara , California. One night Buck is kidnapped and shipped to the Yukon aboard a freighter . During this trip, he is mistreated by a crew member. Upon arrival, Buck returns a dropped harmonica to a man named John Thornton, shortly before being sold to Perrault and his partner Françoise. They use a dog sled to deliver mail across the Yukon. Perrault hopes to make the long way to the postal depot before the deadline. Buck is introduced to the other dogs, including the vicious pack leader, a husky named Spitz.

During their travels, Buck gains the loyalty and trust of Françoise and the other sled dogs, which Spitz antagonizes. Buck begins to experience visions of his ancestors, such as a black wolf that accompanies him on his travels. One night catches a rabbit and then releases it again. Spitz kills it, then attacks Buck to assert its dominance. Buck can defeat him and displaces Spitz as the pack leader who disappears into the wilderness. Perrault reluctantly makes Buck the leader, as no other dog wants to take that position. Thanks to Buck's speed and strength, the sledge can deliver mail on time. Thornton hands over a letter he wrote to his ex-wife to express his feelings for their dead son. When Perrault returns, he learns that the postal route is being replaced by the telegraph , which forces him to sell the dogs. Hal, a corrupt rich man, buys the pack and drives them to exhaustion by letting them carry a heavy load unsuitable for a sled in bad weather.

The exhausted dogs stop to rest before Hal can force them to cross an unstable frozen lake. When Buck refuses to move, Hal threatens to shoot him. Thornton appears and saves Buck, while Hal forces the other sled dogs to cross the lake. Buck recovers under Thornton's care. Thornton is later attacked in a bar by Hal, who reveals that the dogs have abandoned him. Buck sees the scene and attacks Hal, who eventually withdraws. Buck and Thornton travel beyond the Yukon map, where they can live freely in the wild. You come across an abandoned hut in an open valley and settle there. Meanwhile, Hal pursues her relentlessly, believing Thornton is hiding gold .

In the open wilderness, Thornton and Buck bond through their daily activities, mostly fishing and gold panning . During their time together, Buck is drawn to a white wolf lady. Buck, who henceforth spends time with both Thornton and the white wolf, is brought into conflict by his domesticated life with Thornton and his place in the wolf pack to which the female belongs. Thornton believes it is time to return home and tell Buck that he is leaving in the morning. Buck goes into the woods and sleeps next to the white she-wolf. Hal then finds Thornton and gives him a fatal shot. Buck returns, kills Hal, and pushes him into the hut, which is on fire. Thornton, who is dying, wants Buck to live for himself. He hugs him and calms him down with his last words: “It's okay, boy. You are at home."

The next morning, Buck returns to the wild. There he mates and has offspring with the white wolf and becomes the pack leader who fully accepts the call of the wilderness.
