San Pablo is not far from the northern end of the Berkeley Hills and San Pablo Bay . It is almost completely surrounded by the urban area of Richmond . Interstate 80 runs through San Pablo .

history

Before the Spanish missions in California , the Muwekma Ohlone settled in this area . At the end of the 18th century the Spanish Crown claimed the area and it was donated to the Mission San Francisco de Asís . After Mexican independence from Spain, San Pablo was secularized and transferred from the governor of Upper California to the soldier Francisco María Castro. Rancho San Pablo remained in the possession of the Castro family even after the Mexican-American War .
