Michael Constantine (born Constantine Joanides ; born May 22, 1927 in Reading , Pennsylvania ; † August 31, 2021 there ) was an American actor .

Life

Michael Constantine, the son of a steel worker of Greek descent, made his debut as a theater actor on Broadway in 1955 . In 1959 he took on his first film role in A Mile Fear and was seen two years later in a supporting role in the classic film Sharks of the Big City . In the following years, Constantine appeared early in character roles mainly on television, especially in television series, he was a busy guest star. For his leading role as the long-suffering headmaster in the television series Room 222 , he received an Emmy Award in 1970 and was nominated for a Golden Globe a year later .

Constantine only celebrated a major film success in 2002 with My Big Fat Greek Wedding , in which he played the spirited Greek family patriarch in a prominent supporting role. He embodied this role again in a television series of the same name, which was quickly canceled, and in the cinema sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 in 2016.

Constantine was married to his colleague Julianna McCarthy (* 1929) from 1953 until the divorce in 1969; the couple had two children. Michael Constantine died after a long illness at the end of August 2021 at the age of 94.
