List of United States Departments
The United States departments belong to the executive branch of the federal government of the United States . The first three ministries - the Foreign Ministry , the War Ministry, and the Treasury - were all established within a few weeks of 1789.
The ministries are run by the ministers who are all members of the traditional cabinet . Since 1972, federal law has also provided ministers to succeed the President of the United States : fourth overall after the Vice President , the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Senate President pro tempore , then in a fixed order of the ministries.
Although most federal agencies belong to one of the ministries, some, such as the Environmental Protection Agency , are outside this hierarchy.
The ministries
The departments are extensions of the powers of the President of the United States . They can only be established by Congress . Unlike the German Chancellor, for example, the President cannot restructure these at will and as necessary.
