Eric D. Hargan (born June 3, 1968 ) is an American lawyer , university professor and civil servant.

Career

Eric D. Hargan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with cum laude at Harvard University . He then received his Juris Doctor from Columbia University Law School , where he was the chief editor of the Columbia Law Review . He also earned a Certificate in International Law from the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law at Columbia University . After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice. In the following years, Hargan taught as a professor at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law in Chicago ( Illinois ) with a focus on administrative and health law.

From 2003 to 2007, he held various positions in the United States Department of Health (HHS). Hargan served as the acting United States Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services from February 4 to August 5, 2007 . He also worked as the Departments Regulatory Policy Officer , who oversaw the development and approval of all HHS, CMS and FDA regulations and significant guidelines. Prior to that, he was Deputy General Counsel at the Department of Health.

Hargan was a member of the US government team at the first US – China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) in Beijing between 2006 and 2007 . He also worked with the arms control authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together to biosecurity to improve in developing countries. He also initiated and led the HHS team, which in 2007 developed the first statements on international food safety and import issues.

After leaving the Ministry of Health, he resumed his work as a lawyer. Hargan later was a partner in the Chicago office of the international law firm Greenberg Traurig . He worked in the Health and FDA Business Department, where he focused on transactions, health law and lobbying . During this time he has represented investors, companies and individuals on healthcare investments and health law matters across the industry.

During the administration of Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner , he briefly served as vice chairman of the Healthcare and Human Services Committee .

On March 15, 2017, Hargan was nominated for the post of United States Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services. His confirmation hearing took place on June 7, 2017. The US Senate confirmed his nomination on October 4, 2017. On October 6, 2017 was sworn in as Deputy Secretary Hargan and on October 10, 2017 US President Donald Trump as Acting Minister of Health of the United States appointed.

Before returning to Washington, DC , Hargan lived in the Chicago suburbs with his wife, Emily, and two sons.
