Wolfgang Schütz (born May 17, 1948 in Vienna ) is an Austrian physician, university professor of pharmacology and was rector of the Medical University of Vienna from 2004 to 2015 .

Life

Schütz graduated from a humanistic grammar school in Vienna in May 1966 and then did his military service. During his school days he also completed an acting training. From 1967 to 1973 he studied human medicine at the University of Vienna with a doctorate to become Dr. med. univ. in June 1973. From September 1973 to April 1983 Schütz worked as an assistant doctor at the Institute for Pharmacology at the University of Vienna and at the same time received a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Institute for Physiology of the Ludwig Maximilians from April 1978 to June 1979. University of Munich . 1983 followed a one-year clinical training at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the I. Medical University Clinic, University of Vienna.

In February 1983 he graduated as a specialist in pharmacology and completed his habilitation in pharmacology and toxicology in May of the same year with the subject “On the place of education and action of adenosine in the heart”. He then went to the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf as a visiting professor for the 1984 summer semester . In October 1989 he was awarded the title of "Extraordinary University Professor" by the Federal President. From November 1991 to February 1992 he was again a visiting professor, this time at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and was then appointed full professor of pharmacology in Vienna in May 1993.

From 1995 to 1999 he held the post of director of the Institute for Pharmacology at the University of Vienna , was elected Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna in October 1996 and, thanks to a re-election in 2000, retained this position until the Medical University of Vienna was created in 2004 In 2015, Schütz was rector of the Medical University of Vienna, followed by Markus Müller in October 2015 .

From 1994 to 1996 he was chairman of the ethics committee of the medical faculty and the general hospital of the city of Vienna . Since April 2005, Schütz has been a member of the Presidium (as a representative for the medical universities) of the Austrian Rectors' Conference . From 1995 to 2014, Schütz was chairman of the "Therapeutic Products Evaluation Commission (HEK)", the main association of Austrian social insurance institutions. He was a member of the Drug Safety Committees (1993-2002) and Drug Approvals (1998-2002) in the Ministry of Health and Executive Secretary and Treasurer (2000-2003) of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE).

Wolfgang Schütz published 75 scientific publications and seven publications on the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna.

Schütz is married and has children.
