The airfield Buttwil is designed to replace the airfield Spreitenbach built, which the Limmattal and the ever-increasing Zurich airport had to give way. The holder was initially the Buttwil Airfield Interest Group.

It is mainly used by the Eichenberger AG flight school and the CHS Central Helicopter Services AG for flight training on fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Furthermore, work and cargo flights for the mountain and hut supply of the region are undertaken from there. Gliding operations are ensured by the Zurich gliding group, which also carries out training for glider pilots. The maintenance company Rotor + Wing Technic AG is also located at Buttwil airfield. This is certified as a PART-145 Maintenance Organization and takes care of the maintenance of the aircraft and the infrastructure of the airfield. The Freiamt parachute group also operates its parachute school on the airfield.

As Tower a former is Traffic Tower of the Zurich City Police used.
