Martin's Chapel

The Martinskapelle is a Roman Catholic chapel in Boswil in the canton of Aargau . It is located above the village on the road to Kallern and is a listed building.

The chapel was built in the 10th or 11th century on the foundations of a Roman residential complex. Count Otto II von Habsburg donated them to the Muri monastery in 1110 . In contrast to the Boswiler parish church , which only came into the possession of the monastery in 1483, it was called "upper church". After it was rebuilt in 1567, the Zug stonemason Wolfgang Müller rebuilt it from scratch in 1670. In 1752 the chapel received an altar that was no longer needed in the monastery church . Renovations took place in 1884, 1908 and 1963.

The simply designed chapel faces west against the slope. A small tower rises up between the 9 × 5.5 m nave and the 3 × 4.5 m, weakly drawn-in choir . The portal, protected by a canopy, has a round arch with the coat of arms of Abbot Fridolin Summerer above it. Another coat of arms of the abbot can be found on the ceiling at the transition from the nave to the choir. The altarpiece of the altar is the work of the Zug sculptor Johann Baptist Wickart , the altarpiece depicts Saint Martin of Tours . Next to the pillars of the aedicule are two portraits of Saints Antonius Eremita and Wendelin . The wooden antependium comes from Caspar Wolf .
