Johann Baptist Wickart (born April 16, 1635 in Zug , † May 28, 1705 ibid) was a Swiss sculptor who is known for his altar art.

life and work

Wickart was Catholic and came from Zug. He was the son of Barbara Speck and the sculptor, altar builder and master builder Michael Wickart. In 1658 he married Anna Margarita Zülli. He trained as a sculptor with his father, and around 1665 he took over his father's workshop. In 1659 he was accepted into the Luke Brotherhood . Wickart's main work is the high altar of the parish church of St. Michael in Zug (1686–1689, today in the Trinity Church of Constance ). He created other altars for the parish church of Lachen (1665) and St. Martin's Chapel in Boswil (1669–1670), among others . Wickart's only known stone sculpture was commissioned by the Muri Monastery , a fountain figure of St. Leontius for the Leontius Fountain (1683). Several works have been lost, including the high altar of the Sins parish church and that of the Sarnen women's monastery .
