Parish Church of St. Pankraz

The parish church of St. Pankraz is the Roman Catholic parish church of Boswil in the canton of Aargau . The French-influenced, neo-Gothic building was built at the end of the 19th century. It replaced the old church from the Middle Ages and is a cultural asset of national importance .

history

After the neighboring village of Bünzen had received a new church, the parish of Boswil also decided to build a new one in 1867, as they found the existing church, which dates back to the 11th century, to be too small. The building commission awarded the architect Robert Moser the contract to build a church in the neo-Romanesque style. However, the canton of Aargau, the then Kollator , refused to participate in the costs after a negative expert report and the project failed.

A second project in 1880 also failed because the involved architect LJ Sutter-Meyer died. Thereupon the architect Wilhelm Josef Tugginer , who worked in Mulhouse , offered his services. The canton again opposed the building of the church, but then lost the trial brought by the Boswil-Kallern parish. In 1886 Tugginer revised his project. The construction work, which was under the direction of Alexander Rudloff from Colmar , began in 1888. On October 12, 1890 the inauguration took place. A comprehensive exterior renovation took place in 1985/86 and an interior renovation from 1991 to 1993. The transept received modern stained glass by the Polish artist Jan January Janczak .

Building

The parish church of Boswil is the last neo-Gothic church in the Freiamt region . The south-facing, three-aisled basilica has an incorporated front tower, a slightly protruding transept and a five-eight choir. French models from the early 12th century correspond to the four-part bundle pillars, bud capitals, pointed arches, windows without tracery and the deep approach of the vault. With its high-lying lancet windows , the choir is designed very simply. The four bells in the tower come from the H. Rüetschi foundry in Aarau , the organ on the gallery above the entrance from Orgelbau Kuhn in Männedorf .
