Saw Weissenbach

The Weissenbach saw ( Swiss German Wyssebacher Sagi) is a former water mill with a sawmill in the hamlet of Weissenbach near Boswil in the canton of Aargau . It is a listed cultural asset of national importance . Its history goes back to the 14th century.

history

The hamlet of Weissenbach is located on the creek of the same name on the eastern slope of the Lindenberg , right on the border with Buttwil . In the Boswiler Twingrecht of 1343 the Steckhof Werdolzwile is mentioned, which was renamed about two hundred years later after the stream flowing there. The first mention of a mill was made in a land register from 1380; it is therefore one of the oldest in the Freiamt region . According to a hereditary contract with the Muri monastery , the mill had to be rebuilt in 1426 after severe damage. While the mill operation remained indivisible, the farm was split up further and further through real division.

The mill supplied timber and timber for the farmers in the near and far area. By far the biggest customer was the nearby Muri monastery. There was a great need for wood, especially in the 1690s, when the St. Martin monastery church was being rebuilt. In 1728 the dilapidated mill was removed down to the foundation walls and replaced with a new building. The sawmill that exists today dates from 1836. The grain mill was shut down in 1901, the sawmill remained the only branch of industry.

Since the owner family was no longer able to run the sawmill economically, an association was founded in 1996 with the aim of preserving the building while preserving the structural substance as much as possible. In 1998 the government council of the canton of Aargau placed the Weissenbach saw under monument protection. The restoration began in 1999 and was completed in 2003.

Building

The basement of the sawmill is a rectangular wall square made of natural stone , the superstructure is a wooden structure with a roof made of plain tiles . A toothed longitudinal beam supports the open south side. The water of the Weissenbach is led via a canal to the Sagi pond, which has a volume of 800 m 3 . From there, a cast-iron pressure pipe leads the water with a 20 meter gradient to a Francis turbine , which drives the car milling machine. The frame saw is driven by a wooden channel 40 meters long, which directs the water to a wooden water wheel with a diameter of 5.5 meters.
