Artists' houses Worpswede

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Künstlerhäuser Worpswede eV , founded in Worpswede in 1971 under the direction of the graphic artist Martin Kausche , was an artist in residence program until the end of 2009, one of the largest grant recipients in Germany and Europe .

Fine arts and sound art scholarship holders lived and worked in a total of ten studios for a period of three to six months. In the field of fine arts, the preselection was made by international experts. The scholarships are awarded once a year on the recommendation of a specialist jury.

The Künstlerhäuser Worpswede was supported by the Barkenhoff Foundation Worpswede and the private initiative Atelierhaus e. V., who jointly provide the studios. The state of Lower Saxony supported the facility by awarding scholarships of € 1,400 per month.

history

Since 1971 over 400 artists from more than 35 countries have been guests. Among the alumni, there are many renowned international artists like Cony Theis , Emmett Williams , Lili Fischer , Yuri Leiderman , Heini left-handed , Dan Perjovschi , Katharina Sieverding or Egill Sæbjörnsson and the composer John Oswald , Peter Machajdík , Stefano Giannotti and Karsten storm as a writer .

From October 2006 onwards, under the artistic direction of Bernd Milla, the artists' houses were repositioned with a focus on sustainable artist promotion and artistic and cultural exchange. In addition to the regular presentation of the work created in the studios inside and outside Worpswede, artist talks, workshops and symposia on promoting artists took place in the Barkenhoff Remise.

The cooperation with art colleges was included in the conception: In cooperation with the Zurich University of the Arts, an edition series with scholarship holders from the artist houses was developed, which was shown in June 2008 in a mobile exhibition room with stations in Worpswede , Bremen , Kassel and Zurich .

The networks of curators, gallery owners and art critics could be expanded through short-term guest stays. The artists' houses also fostered the loyalty of former scholarship holders. Exemplary here are the exhibitions worpswunder 2007 in the Kunstverein Springhornhof Neuenkirchen and worpswelten in the Göttinger Kunstverein 2008.

In 2009, the state of Lower Saxony decided to change the funding for scholarship holders and to take the lead at Leuphana University Lüneburg while maintaining the artist houses in Worpswede.

From 2010 the artists' houses had to reposition themselves and were initially only able to offer local grants. With EU funding, supra-regional artist funding could be resumed from 2013. It was recognized that tourists in Worpswede prefer older art, but the studios are important for the future of the artist village.
