Nikolaos Doxaras ( Greek Νικόλαος Δοξαράς , * approx. 1706/1710 in Kalamata ; † March 2, 1775 in Zakynthos ) was a Greek painter and son of Panagiotis Doxaras . He was one of the pioneers of the Ionian Islands painting school .

Life

Nikolaos Doxaras lived on the Ionian islands of Zakynthos , Leukas , Corfu and Kefalonia . In 1729 he entered the service of the Venetian army. He later went to Venice , where he studied as a military mechanic and one as a painter. In 1738 he returned to Leukas and in 1745 he became an officer in the Gendarmerie of Kephallonia .

Between 1753 and 1762 he worked on Zakynthos as an assistant in the picturesque decoration of the ceiling of the Church of the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin. This plant was destroyed in the 1953 earthquake . Drafts of the work have been preserved and are in the National Art Gallery of Greece. The Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos keeps an original passage, "The Birth of the Mother of God". Nikolaos Doxaras also painted the ceiling of the Church of Saint Minas on the island of Leukas . This plant was also destroyed by fire.

Nikolaos Doxaras continued his father's artistic tradition by replacing Byzantine icon painting with works of Italian-influenced painting. His works were decisive for the orientation of Greek painting to painting in Italy.
