František Čáp

František Čáp (born December 7, 1913 in Tschachowitz, Bohemia , † January 12, 1972 in Ankaran , Slovenia ) was a Czech director. In Germany he also called himself Franz Cap.

Life

Čáp attended the Pisek secondary school and the agricultural school. In 1932 he began his stage and film work in Prague. In the same year he was an actor in the film Vor der Matura ( Pred maturitou ) by Svatopluk Innemann and Vladislav Vančura . From 1937 he wrote scripts for the dramas Jungfernschaft (1937, Panenství ) and Step into the Dark (1938, Krok do tmy ).

The first directorial work (together with Václav Krska) was the film Ohnivé léto with the actors Václav Sova, Otýlie Benísková and Lída Baarová . For the Prague production company Lucernafilm followed in 1940 Panna with Vera Ferbasová and the film adaptation of the novel by Božena Němcová Babicka with Terezie Brzková in the title role.

In 1941 he got at the Venice International Film Festival a jury commendation for the film Noční motýl ( German  The Moth ).

At the Cannes Film Festival in 1946 he won the Grand Prix for the film Muži bez křídel ( German  men without wings ).

In 1950 he shot the thriller Kronjuwelen for Bavaria Film in the Federal Republic of Germany with Sybille Schmitz and Hans Nielsen in the lead roles. In 1951 the drama The Eternal Game with Will Quadflieg followed for Merkur Film . In 1952 he took over the direction of the CCC film production The Track Leads to Berlin .

In 1954 and 1955 he received the Golden Arena award for the best film at the Yugoslav Film Festival in Pula . One of his most famous films, Die Geierwally, based on the novel of the same name by Wilhelmine von Hillern , was shot by Čáp in 1956 in Germany .
