Vladislav Vančura
Vladislav Vančura (born June 23, 1891 in Háj ve Slezsku , near Troppau , Austria-Hungary ; died June 1, 1942 in Prague - Kobylisy ) was a Czech writer , playwright , film director and doctor .
Life
Vančura, who published his first publications in magazines in 1919, had been a member of the Devětsil artists ' association since 1920 and a representative of poetism . The highlight of Vančura's literary work is the three-part work “Obrazy z dějin národa českého” (“Pictures from the history of the Czech people”), in which Czech history is dealt with up to the last Přemyslids . Vladislav Vančura was a cousin of Antonín Vančura , better known as the Brno writer, playwright, poet, journalist and librarian Jiří Mahen (1882-1939).
In the second half of the 1920s Vančura was a participant in the meetings of the informal regulars' table group Prague intellectual Pátečníci .
Vančura was a member of the communist party . As a signatory of the Critical Manifesto of the Seven , however, he was expelled from the party in March 1929; he was also a member of the avant-garde group Levá fronta (Left Front). During the Second World War he campaigned against the German occupation. On May 12, 1942, as part of the repression following the Heydrich assassination attempt, he was arrested by the Gestapo in his home in Zbraslav and shot at the Kobylisy firing range in Prague without trial. His body was cremated in the Strašnice crematorium in the Vinohrady cemetery , and the ashes were anonymously buried on the cemetery grounds.
For his life's work he was given the title “National Artist ” in memoriam and, post mortem , he was also awarded the Order of the White Lion “For Victory” and the Czechoslovak War Cross in 1939 by the President . Vančura's monument from the workshop of the architect Jindřich Czeniek stands in his native Háj ve Slezsku. The compatriot became an honorary citizen of the community in 1995.
