action

The film is set in 1944. Franz Köhler is imprisoned in the Mauthausen concentration camp . The camp is a labor camp, where the detainees are tortured by hard labor. Franz's half-brother works here as a security guard. As an SS man, Willy is the exact opposite of his brother Franz. When the Red Army moves closer to the camp on its advance on the Eastern Front, the camp commandant decides that all inmates should be murdered. They are to be enclosed in a mine tunnel and the tunnel then blown up.

The camp inmates learn of the plans. Franz is supposed to be the only one to flee the camp and organize support for the inmates. The escape is noticed and a guard, including Brother Willy, goes in search of Franz. Franz tries to reach the Red Army. For a few days his escape seems to be successful. But shortly before he can reach the Red Army, he is caught by his pursuers and shot by his own brother.

"The film suffers from gross dramaturgical weaknesses and emphasizes spectacular elements too strongly: what should actually be shocking, occasionally flattens up to the colportage."
