Takó, who grew up as a half-orphan, has few real memories of his father who died at the end of the war. He attributes to his father an outstanding role as a partisan , an important doctor, a great traveler and war hero. These fantasies not only accompany the boy in his daydreams, he also uses these heroic stories to enhance his own self at every opportunity: at school, where he becomes the class representative, later as a young adult with friends and finally in the uprising of 1956, where the student in the name of the father at risk of death brings a flag that nobody needs. Only towards the end of the film does Takó begin to research his father's real life, interview people who had still seen his father and learn that his father was a valued and loved person, but not a hero, but an average citizen. The relationship with a Jewish fellow student whose parents were victims of the Holocaust finally opens Takó's eyes to the ridiculousness of his behavior. With the intention of finally achieving something on his own, Takó swims the Danube . Behind him you can see many others who are apparently doing the same test of courage.

Father's theme is the inner logic of psychological deformation in a dictatorship: the boy not only continues to dream the stories and hints of his mother, he also likes to fall back on the role models that Stalinism offers for the enhancement of personality. Anyone who claims more than the social role within the system must be a hero or join the resistance. With Takó's persistent self-enlightenment about the actual life of his father, an alternative to the personality cult is suggested. In terms of material, the focus is on the student days with their numerous discussions and high expectations in a socio-political reality that is still enclosed, but gradually opening up to the world.
Father is the outstanding centerpiece of a trilogy that began with Álmodozások kora ( The Age of Dreams ) (1964) and ended with Szerelmesfilm ( love film ) (1970), which traces Takó's life from childhood to his first longed-for trip to France as a young husband . The work is considered to be one of the most important Hungarian films of the 1960s and a key work in the renaissance of Hungarian film culture at that time. The film won the main prize at the Moscow Film Festival in 1967 .
