János Kende

János Kende (born September 22, 1941 in Marseille , France ) is a Hungarian cameraman , a key visual designer in his country's cinema.

Life

Kende came to his parents' country from France at the age of five and attended the Budapest Film Academy until 1965. Then he began his professional activity as a simple cameraman. In the mid-1960s, Kende rose to become chief cameraman. His very first film, Father , caused a sensation. Since then, Kende has collaborated with leading directors in his country, including István Szabó , Márta Mészáros , Pál Gábor and again and again Miklós Jancsó .

“János Kende photographed present-day stories from everyday socialist life with a lot of empathy. He designed a strictly reduced (to the essentials), sometimes almost rigid, optical design style, which can be found above all in Jancsó's works. Since the early 1990s, Kende has been behind the camera less often and has taken on one or two government posts in the Hungarian film industry. For example, he was President of the Association of Hungarian Cinematographers. In 2002 he finished his work as a feature film cameraman.
