La technica e il rito (literally “The technology and the ritual”) is a television fiction film produced by the RAI by the Hungarian director Miklós Jancsó and made in Italy in 1972. The script was based on an idea from Jancsó's then partner Giovanna Gagliardo . The central figure is Attila the Hun, albeit not as a historically correct figure, but as an abstract figure who embodies power. The people who surround the charismatic leader are at his mercy, they love and hate him. Stylistically, this film corresponds to Jancsó's other works from this period.
In a review published in 1972, Positif defended Jancsó against those critics who believed that his style was merely self-referential; the director, like many others, has a style whose possibilities he fully exploits. Nevertheless, La technica e il rito does not come close to Agnus dei and Roter Psalm , perhaps because Jancsó needs the cinema screen and cannot cope with the television aesthetics, perhaps because he has difficulty accessing the Italian-speaking actors, perhaps because he is used to being Hungarian Decor is dependent. For these reasons, the film tends towards abstraction and coldness, which often create monotony. Despite a few strong moments, he misses the fullness of life in Red Psalm .
