György Illés

György Illés (born November 2, 1914 in Eger , Austria-Hungary , † June 12, 2006 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian cameraman .

Life and career

György Illés was born in 1914 to Mihály Illés and Bertha Stark in Eger, northern Hungary. He discovered his passion for the cinema at an early age and when he was 17 he was given his first camera.

The family later moved to Budapest, where Illés met the cameraman István Eiben . He initially worked as a lighting technician and camera assistant. Later he worked as a cameraman in the production of newsreels and documentaries. In 1949 he was employed for the first time as a cameraman for a large feature film production. In the same year he began teaching at the Budapest Drama and Film School ( Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskola ), where he trained as a cameraman. His students included numerous renowned Hungarian cameramen such as Sándor Sára , Lajos Koltai , László Kovács , Sándor Kardos , János Kende , Elemér Ragályi and Vilmos Zsigmond . Illés worked at the university for more than 50 years and was temporarily prorector and from 1990–91 also rector of the university.

In his long career Illés worked as a cameraman for directors such as Félix Máriássy , Károly Makk , Zoltán Várkonyi , János Herskó and Zoltán Fábri . With Fábri he made the films Jungs aus der Paulstrasse and Die Hungarians , which received a nomination at the Oscars in 1969 and 1978 for the best foreign language film .

Since 1990 Illés has been President of the Hungarian Association of Cameramen ( Magyar Operatőrök Társasága ). From 1993 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Duna Televízió and from 1995 President of the Hungarian Film and Television Actors Association ( Magyar Film-és TV-Művészek Szövetsége ).

Illés last lived in the Zugló district of Budapest . He died in 2006 at the age of 91 and was buried in the presence of numerous Hungarian filmmakers in the Farkasréti temető cemetery in Budapest.
