The fifth seal (original title: Az ötödik pecsét ) is a Hungarian war film from 1976 by Zoltán Fábri based on a novel by the Hungarian author Ferenc Sánta . The film won the gold award at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival and took part in the competition at the 27th Berlin International Film Festival . The film was also submitted as a Hungarian entry for an Oscar in the “ Best Foreign Language Film ” category , but received no nomination.

The film is based on a book by Ferenc Sánta. Autumn 1944: Every evening four friends meet in a restaurant. World War II is raging beyond the walls. At night neighbors disappear without a trace, kidnapped by the secret police. But the friends take comfort in the fact that, as ordinary people, they do not have the strength to change anything. They wash their hands innocently and are not responsible for the atrocities that happen outside. Her hopes of sitting out the war without being involved, however, soon fail when a mysterious veteran of the First World War visits the restaurant.
