occupation

In the Swamp of Crime ( Just Cause ) is an American thriller directed by Arne Glimcher from 1995 . The script by Peter Stone and Jeb Stuart is based on a novel by John Katzenbach .

action

Paul Armstrong is a law professor at Harvard University . His views are considered liberal. You can see him pleading against the death penalty in a panel discussion . After the discussion, he is approached by Bobby Earl's grandmother. Bobby Earl was convicted of murder in Florida and is due to be executed on the electric chair . She hands him a letter from Bobby Earl asking Armstrong to defend him. ( Deviation from the book: Here the main actor is a reporter and the convicted person writes to him directly )

The professor first has doubts; he had the last client 25 years earlier. Then he'll take over the case.

Earl, an African American who graduated from Cornell University , allegedly raped and murdered a young white girl. He tells Armstrong that two racist police officers forced him to make the confession. He was interrogated and tortured for 22 hours without a break.

Armstrong meets the serial killer Blair Sullivan, who is also waiting to be executed . He points Armstrong to the gun he allegedly used to kill the little girl. Bobby Earl is released.

But later it turns out that Earl is actually guilty and that Sullivan and Earl have made a date: If Sullivan takes the guilt of Earl, Earl kills Sullivan's parents in return. You are found dead. Earl seeks revenge on Armstrong's wife, Laurie, who had indicted him, albeit unsuccessfully, as a prosecutor in an earlier trial. At that time he spent one night in detention where he was neutered. When he kidnaps her and her daughter Kate and wants to kill them in a remote house in the middle of the swamp, Armstrong appears in time. Earl is shot by Armstrong, the two fight each other in the swamp, whereupon Earl is ultimately stabbed by Armstrong.
