action

In 1882 the fences of civilization had not yet reached the western United States . As a freegrazer , Boss Spearman drives his herd of cattle from one free pasture ( "open range" ) to the next. The civil war veteran Charley Waite, the massive and gentle Moses and the young and inexperienced Mexican Button work for him. Together they form a kind of family. The peace ends when Moses rides into the town of Harmonville to buy supplies. The city is bullied by Denton Baxter, the area's biggest rancher and owner of half the city. In Baxter's saloon, Mose is beaten up by Baxter's people and then arrested by the corrupt Marshal Poole for allegedly causing the brawl. When Moses is picked up by Boss and Charley, the marshal waives a fine if they leave the area quickly. Baxter, who is also present, clearly expresses his hatred of freegrazers , whose cattle eat the grass on free pastureland that he uses for his own cattle. He also lets it be known that he has already had other Freegrazers shot.

After the three cowboys are back at their camp, they learn from Button that masked men are with their herd. However, Baxter's men avoid an open fight, so Boss and Charley follow them and overpower them at their night camp. However, other men from Baxter have meanwhile raided their camp, not only shooting Charley's dog, but also Mose and seriously injuring Button. Boss and Charley take the boy to the doctor Barlow, with whose sister Sue Charley falls in love.

Then there is a showdown in the middle of the village, in which Boss and Charley face the rancher and his four men. Three other men are said to stab the cowboys in the back through side streets. The war experienced Charley can take out the murderer of Mose with a lightning-fast headshot. An extensive shootout ensues in which the corrupt marshal fights with four other men on the rancher's side. Initially intimidated by the rancher, the villagers side with the Freegrazers during the fight . After Boss can finally confront Baxter, they practice bloody vigilante justice on Baxter's surviving henchmen.

Charley asks Sue for her hand after the fight, despite all self-doubt. She agrees and says goodbye to him, because he wants to sell the herd with Boss first so that they can buy the local saloon with this money. However, he promises to return.

Reviews

“Breathtakingly photographed melancholy late-wisters sympathizing with their conservative heroes, who pay homage to nostalgic virtues and who draw their courage to survive solely from the fact that they have nothing left to lose. Convincingly staged and played, the film uses the genre to reflect on the decline of traditions and values. "

“Upright cowboys, lush pastureland, campfire romance, evil cattle barons, corrupt sheriffs, shoot-outs à la twelve o'clock noon , on the fringes also a little love: the cliché box for Westerns is quickly jam-packed. What was surprising about Kevin Costner's Open Range - Wide Country isn't that none of it has been left out. But that his film is unobtrusive in the best sense and not an unwanted self-parody. [...] It's wonderfully old-fashioned cinema for the quieter moments in life, a wistful Wild West drama that still smells of freedom and adventure. "
