Michael Jeter (born August 26, 1952 in Lawrenceburg , Tennessee , † March 30, 2003 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .
Life
Michael Jeter graduated from Memphis State University . After off-Broadway engagements, he played in Once in a lifetime on Broadway in 1978 . The following year he won the Theater World Award and had a role in the film Hair, based on the musical of the same name . In the course of his career he had other roles in films as diverse as Jacob the Liar , Waterworld , The Green Mile and Terry Gilliam's King of the Fishermen . In addition to guest appearances in television series such as Lou Grant and Picket Fences , he had a recurring role as assistant coach in Daddy Creates Us All with Burt Reynolds in the lead role, for which he was awarded an Emmy Award in 1992 . In 1990 he had already received a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway musical Grand Hotel .
Jeter was openly gay . In 1997 he was diagnosed as HIV positive and died in 2003 of an epileptic seizure .
