The strength of the force (Original title: A Show of Force ) is an American film by the director Bruno Barreto from 1990 , in which Amy Irving and Andy García play the leading roles. It was Bruno Barreto's first US work and is based in part on a true fact.
The film is based on the script by Evan Jones and John Strong, which is based on the book Murder Under Two Flags: The US, Puerto Rico, and the Cerro Maravilla Cover-Up by Anne Nelson.
action
Two alleged terrorists are killed in a legal operation by the Puerto Rican police shortly before the gubernatorial election . But television journalist Kate Meléndez believes based on her own observations that nothing in the incident is what it appears to be. In her research, she comes across an impenetrable web of lies in the police and government, in which the FBI man in Puerto Rico, Frank Curtis, seems to play a role, while the governor , who is very strong for law and order and adherence to the United States starts, wins the election again due to the event .
Because of their research, there is a later investigation, which is closed by the governor. Eventually the Senate of Puerto Rico begins its own investigation, led by Special Counsel Luis Angel Mora. They discover that the two were arrested but then executed, only to be able to slip evidence on them that would make them appear to be actual terrorists who died in a firefight unless they resisted the arrest. It also becomes clear that while they were far-left opposition and part of the independence movement that seeks to separate Puerto Rico from the United States, they were not terrorists and the police knew that. All attempts by the governor's party to discredit the investigation fail and it also becomes clear that the murders were committed to help the governor win re-election, but there is no definitive evidence.
When Frank Curtis thinks he is safe, he confronts Kate about her actions. He admits he orchestrated the murders to help the anti-communist governor win the election, not knowing that Luis noticed the conversation and instructed her cameraman to approach both of them and broadcast the conversation live. So they hear his confession and death threat to her because of the harm she has done to him and the governor through her actions. It is implied that those responsible will be punished for these crimes after Curtis' unwitting public confession and that the governor is politically finished because of it.
background
The film is based in part on a true event from 1978, in which two opposition activists who were fighting for the independence of the Caribbean island and were on the trail of a major scandal were shot by the police. Both the governor and the US Department of Justice were implicated in the affair sought to cover up. Barreto processed this into a mix of reality and fiction, which particularly scores with its prominent cast.
