Lupe Ontiveros (born September 17, 1942 in El Paso , Texas - † July 26, 2012 in Whittier , California ; a native of Guadalupe Moreno ) was an American actress .

Life

Ontiveros graduated from Texas Women's University with a degree in Psychology . In 1975 she co-founded the Latino Theater Company , with which she performed in the later years. As a television actress, she made her debut in an episode of the television series Charlie's Angels from 1976. This was followed by numerous minor supporting roles such as that of a domestic help, which she - according to her estimates - played a total of approximately "300 times". In the adventure film El Norte (1983) by director Gregory Nava she played one of the bigger roles. She played another major role in the comedy Born in East LA (1987) by Cheech Marin , who also wrote the screenplay and played the leading role - Ontiveros played his mother in the film.

Ontiveros was nominated for an NCLR Bravo Award for her role in the drama ... And the Earth Did Not Swallow Him (1995) . In the comedy Besser geht's nicht (1997) she starred on the side of Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt ; for this role she was nominated for the 1998 ALMA Award . She received the ALMA Award in 1998 for her role in the television series Veronica . For her role in the comedy Chuck & Buck (2000) she won the National Board of Review Award in 2000 , and in 2001 she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award and the Chlotrudis Award . The role in the comedy Real Women Have Curves (2002) alongside America Ferrera earned her a special jury award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002 and the Imagen Award in 2003 . She was nominated for an Emmy in 2005 for her appearances on the television series Desperate Housewives in 2004 and 2005 .

Lupe Ontiveros died of liver cancer on July 26, 2012 in Whittier , California , at the age of 69 . She was married to Elias Ontiveros and has three sons.
