action

Rudy, an auto mechanic of Mexican descent, lives in East Los Angeles . However, he is an American citizen and has little knowledge of both the Spanish language and Mexican culture as his family has lived in the United States for four generations. Before his mother goes to Fresno , she hires Rudy to pick up his cousin Javier from his workplace, a toy factory that employs illegally immigrated Mexicans. Shortly after Rudy arrives there, he is caught by an immigration raid. The officers believe that he is an illegal immigrant, despite his perfect command of English, and Rudy cannot identify himself because he forgot his wallet at home. He is therefore deported to Mexico and ends up in the border town of Tijuana . There he turns to American officials who, however, do not believe his story and therefore Rudy has to stay in Mexico. He tries to call his cousin Javier in Los Angeles so that he can bring him his ID. However, Javier's phone is behind a picture of Jesus, which is why Javier cannot find the phone. Rudy destroys the phone out of anger and is imprisoned for one night. In prison, a fellow inmate protects him from being raped and demands 100 dollars for it, money that Rudy does not have with him. After Rudy is released from prison, he makes several attempts to get across the border, but all of them fail. In Tijuana, Rudy meets the American Jimmy, who runs a nightclub there. He offers Rudy a job and the two become friends. Jimmy has contacts with people smugglers who bring people to America for $ 500. So Rudy takes on several jobs, he works in Jimmy's nightclub, as an orange seller or as a musician. He also teaches Chinese and Indians planning to immigrate to the States illegally how Americans behave in East Los Angeles. He meets the waitress Dolores and the two fall in love. Through his various jobs, Rudy manages to raise the $ 500 for the people smuggler. However, he meets a family that does not have enough money to smuggle people and gives them the opportunity to immigrate to the United States. Instead, Rudy rounds up hundreds of Mexicans who flock together across the border. The only two border officials are completely overwhelmed by the large number of immigrants. Rudy and Dolores now live together in East LA

Reviews

“All in all, the humor has the charm of its time and can be compared with Chevy Chase and Steve Martin things, idiosyncratic, a bit silly but harmless. A thoroughly funny film that unfortunately received very little attention despite its charm. "

- moviepilot.de

"As a parody of the American self-image, a comedic examination of the problems of Mexican immigrants, which suffers from naivety and the not very tight dramaturgy."

production

The film was shot in two months in Los Angeles and Tijuana . It grossed about $ 17 million in the United States.
