The Secret Man ( English for "The Secret Man", original title: Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House ) is an American spy thriller - biopic from 2017 . It is based on the autobiography of FBI agent Mark Felt , who served as an anonymous source for journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein during the Watergate affair . The regular US theatrical release was on September 29, 2017.

In the summer of 1972, after the death of his superior J. Edgar Hoover , the FBI's vice-chief, Mark Felt, expects to become his successor. However, US President Richard Nixon appointed Patrick Gray as the new head of the FBI. An employee Felts, the investigation into the Watergate scandal quickly shelved ad will put triggers the system in Felt doubt. He then decides to give journalists the Washington Post specific information that will lead to the resignation of the US president.
