Seung Sahn (* 1927 in Seun Choen , Korea ; † November 30, 2004 in Seoul ) was a South Korean Zen master.
As a young man, he first studied Western philosophy at Dong Guk University in Seoul. At the age of twenty he became a monk of the Chogye Order , the largest Buddhist order in South Korea. In 1970 he moved to the USA and founded the Kwan Um Zen School in Providence , Rhode Island. The school now has centers around the world, with a focus on the US, Europe and Asia.
In the course of his life, Zen master Seung Sahn has given eleven master transmissions, and he has also given certain advanced students called Ji Do Poep Sa Nim or Dharma masters the teaching license (Inka).
His students address him with the title "Dae Soen Sa Nim" (DSSN), "revered Zen master".
