Scrabster ( Scottish Gaelic Sgrabastal or Sgrabastair ) is a small ferry port in northern Scotland with regular ferry services to the small port town of Stromness on the main island of Mainland , part of the Orkney Islands . From the summer of 2007 Scrabster was also called by the Faroese ferry Norröna and thus received a temporary direct connection to Tórshavn ( Faroe Islands ), on to Seyðisfjörður ( Iceland ), to Bergen in Norway and to Hanstholm , Denmark . This connection has ceased to exist since January 2009. Since then, the Norröna has only operated between Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Iceland.
The port of Scrabster is the northernmost port on the British main island and is located on Thurso Bay just two kilometers northwest of the small town of Thurso . In addition to its function as a nationally important ferry port, it is also a locally important fishing port.
