action

Dede Tate ( Jodie Foster ) is a waitress and single mother. When her boy is just starting to speak, he grabs a plate and says “suitcase!”. The mother shakes her head and says: “No, stupid, this is a plate!” But when she looks at the back of the plate, her gaze freezes: the manufacturer is called “suitcase”. Her son Fred has therefore been considered very talented from an early age, but neither in school nor in the home environment can his intellect be promoted accordingly. After initial hesitation, Dede hands her son over to the care of the scientist Jane Grierson ( Dianne Wiest ), who organized a support program for gifted children. Fred feels abandoned by his mother, especially in the strictly organized world of Jane Grierson. On a TV show, he says that his mother died.

At times Dede sees Jane Grierson as a competitor for her son's attention, but later she realizes that only both women together can give Fred an optimal upbringing.

“Jodie Foster, who was kind of a child prodigy herself, made a very human film. - "A small miracle: gentle, touching" "

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film “grippingly and very sensitively deals with the subject of childlike loneliness” .

epd Film 2/1992 wrote that “a quiet, modest film (...) came out, as far away from the pomp and pomp of Hollywood as Foster has always been”.
