Emergence

The music for the film Isle of Dogs - Atari's Journey , a stop-motion animated film directed by Wes Anderson , was composed by Alexandre Desplat . Desplat and Anderson last collaborated for the 2014 film Grand Budapest Hotel .

Desplat worked on the recording with the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra , the Toho Symphony Orchestra, multi-instrumentalists David Mansfield and Kaoru Watanabe. In addition to Japanese shamisen sounds, taiko drums were also used during the recording , as in the piece Taiko Drumming , which like to be powerful and heralds disaster or at least a worsening situation, as Tim Caspar Boehme from taz in his review of the film noticed.

publication

A soundtrack with 22 pieces of music, which in addition to the soundtrack by Desplat also contains pieces from the Japanese films The Seven Samurai and Angels of the Lost , was released on March 23, 2018 by ABKCO Records, after a release was originally planned on March 30, 2018. A first trailer for the film was the song I Won't Hurt You by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, which is also included on the soundtrack.

Story of the film

In the film, 20 years after the current dog flu outbreak, all dogs from Megasaki City, a fictional Japanese city, are banished to the remote island of Trash Island. The first dog to be deported to the island is Spots, the watchdog of Mayor Kobayashi's ward Atari. One day there is a crash landing on Trash Island. Atari flew to the island to look for his lost dog. The pack around the deported dog Chief quickly understands what the boy is looking for when he shows them a photo of his beloved four-legged friend.

reception

Anke Westphal from epd Film says that Alexandre Desplat's strongly syncopated rhythms for the soundtrack, but also the Japanese drums and excerpts from Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kishe Suite do the rest to create the impression of a highly stylized world.

Kaya Savas says that even if the music for the film is heavily influenced by the sounds of traditional Japanese music, it seems to have something of Ennio Morricone's spirit within it, especially when it comes to the movements in the narrative with a very specific set of themes and To furnish motifs. The backbone of the film music is based almost exclusively on percussion , whose constant rhythm sets the pace that determines the entire film, according to Savas. The rhythmic beats become almost hypnotic as the film progresses, and the way they coincide with the film editing is extremely impressive: “The fact that the music for a stop-motion film is so in sync with the cuts and tracking shots , makes everything extremely awesome. "
